Research-based buying guide. Retailer search links in this story are ordinary links; affiliate links, where present, are identified separately. How our links work.
A phone has every book you could want and every notification you do not need. A dedicated e-reader can make reading feel more deliberate. The useful differences are not just screen size: library access, file support, lighting, and the way you hold the device shape the experience.
Start with where your books come from
Check store availability and library borrowing support in your country. Library integration differs by device and region. If you already own digital books, confirm compatible formats and any rights-management restrictions. A low hardware price is less appealing if it separates you from the collection or borrowing service you actually use.
Choose a screen for your material
Ordinary novels suit a compact reader, while PDFs, textbooks, and illustrated material can be awkward on a small monochrome display. Color e-paper has different compromises from a tablet. Look at examples of the content you read rather than assuming a larger feature list will improve ordinary text.
Think about the last ten minutes of the day
Adjustable front lighting and warmer color settings can make the display more comfortable to look at in a dim room. They are not medical sleep treatments. Check minimum brightness, button placement, and weight with a cover. Physical page buttons can be convenient when reading one-handed, but some readers prefer touch alone.
Keep the purchase focused
A note-taking reader is larger and more expensive than many book-focused devices. Buy that capability only if annotation and document export are part of your routine. During the return window, download a library book, change text size, and read in your usual chair. A reader should make getting back to a book feel easy.
