One earbud keeps slipping during the walk to the grocery store; the other starts aching halfway through a call. Buying another expensive pair will not necessarily fix either problem. The shell shape, nozzle angle, and available tip sizes decide how an earbud sits, and those details deserve more attention than a promise of studio sound.
Start with the shell, then the tip
Look for photographs showing the buds in a person’s ears, not just floating against a white background. A large body can press against the outer ear even with a tiny silicone tip. Extra-small tips are useful, but check whether replacements are sold separately and whether third-party tips allow the charging case to close.
A seal should feel secure, not forceful
Try a different tip size in each ear if necessary. Insert the bud gently, then speak, smile, and move your jaw. A stable seal should survive those movements without deep pressure. Foam tips can change comfort and isolation, but they wear out and need replacement; include that recurring cost when comparing a low-price pair with a better-fitting alternative.
Decide how much isolation you want
Sealed earbuds can make a train journey calmer, while open-fit designs leave more ambient sound available. Neither format is automatically safer outdoors. Keep the volume low enough to stay aware and pause at crossings. If you dislike the sensation of a seal, changing the style may solve more than upgrading the noise-canceling system.
Check the retailer’s hygiene policy
Earbud returns may have different rules from other electronics. Read the opened-item policy before ordering, keep all the tips, and assess fit early. For work calls, record a brief sample in your usual room. Tiny earbuds that fit beautifully but make your voice difficult to hear are a poor match for a call-heavy week.
