You want recipes without balancing a laptop on the counter, books on the train, and handwritten notes during a meeting. A tablet can cover that middle ground, but the accessories can push the total cost toward a laptop. Start by deciding which task is worth carrying another screen for.
Hold the size you plan to buy
A large display is comfortable for split-screen notes but tiring to hold one-handed in bed. Compare the weight with a case attached, not just the tablet alone. If reading is the main task, a smaller tablet or dedicated e-reader may be easier to live with. Check accessibility settings and text scaling before purchase.
Add up the writing system
Stylus compatibility is model-specific, even within a single brand. Check whether the pen is included, how it charges, and whether the apps you use support its pressure or shortcut features. A basic stylus may be enough for occasional annotation. Frequent handwriting deserves a practical test of palm rejection, latency, and export options.
Check the apps, storage, and connection
Make sure your preferred reading, note-taking, and work apps are available on the operating system. Look at offline access and how files leave the device. Cellular connectivity adds convenience and potentially a data plan; a Wi-Fi model with downloaded books may be enough. Avoid paying for storage you will never fill, but leave room for offline video and documents.
Give it a real job immediately
Read for half an hour, annotate a document, and follow a recipe during the return window. Try the stand and case on your actual surfaces. If every serious task sends you back to the laptop, consider whether the tablet is still useful enough as a reading device to justify the purchase.
