A phone holds the birthday pictures, the laptop has the edited versions, and an old drive contains something you hope is a backup. A portable SSD can make the collection easier to manage, but one copy on a new drive is still one copy. The routine matters more than the enclosure’s finish.

Estimate the real library

Check how much space your photos and videos already use, then allow room for growth. Video can consume capacity quickly. Compare the drive’s usable capacity and connector with your computer. Very high advertised transfer speeds require a compatible port and cable; they may not appear on an older laptop.

Choose a useful physical design

A small drive is easy to carry and easy to lose. A short replaceable cable, a durable enclosure, and a storage pouch can be more useful than a decorative light. Water- or drop-resistance claims have specific conditions and do not make a drive indestructible. Keep an additional copy somewhere separate from your laptop bag.

Make the backup automatic where possible

Use your operating system’s supported backup tools or a reputable backup application. Decide whether encryption is appropriate for personal documents and keep recovery information securely. A synchronized folder can reproduce accidental deletions, so understand version history and retention rather than assuming synchronization is a complete backup strategy.

Practice getting a file back

After the first backup, restore a few photos to a different folder and open them. Repeat that check occasionally. Label the drive and schedule a recurring backup time if it is not always connected. For irreplaceable material, combine a local copy with a separate off-site copy rather than buying one enormous drive and stopping there.
